The effects of structured group play activities on mentally retarded children¡¯s social competence

Abstract
The present study was aimed to find out whether the structured group play activities affects a social competence with mental retarded children¡¯s. As a primary school, an object of the research was mental retarded children¡¯s which was allocated to special education group by part time and the number of research objectives were four and comparatives were three. The study addressed the following questions. First, did the Structured group play have an improved mental retarded children¡¯s social competence? Second, did the Structured group play have a change mental retarded children¡¯s social skill? Structured group play activities is 12 program sessions (60 minutes each session) were conducted in learning aid lab in the school twice a week. A session was composed of relaxation (10minutes), Structuralization (25minutes), discussion (10minutes), and free play (15minutes). The program was composed of therapeutic factors of group play, relation-increase, empathy relaxation, socialization, positive emotional experience in play activities by referring to group pattern, which was proposed to children of school age. To find out effect of the program, we performed examination of Walker-McConnell Scale of ¡¯Social Competence and School-adjustment Action¡¯ and compared social tech change in play activities by each session. The results of the study were as followed: First, Structured group play object of the research was improved teacher-preferring social action, peer-preferring action, School-adjustment action capability of mental retarded children. Second, they showed the positive change through the Structured group play which had an effect on the assertive, cooperative and self-control ability of children with mental retardation. In conclusion, the structured group play activities with mental retarded children¡¯s has the positive effects for social competence.
